Kasparov defeats Azmaiparashvili 5½-½
Garry Kasparov, the world's all-time top chess player lived up to his fame, as he defeated the European champion, Zurab Azmaiparashvili 5½-½ in six exhibition games. The clash, held at the picturesque village of Panormos, some 20 kilometres east of Rethymnon, in Crete, included two rapid and four blitz games. The two Grand Masters will also be competing in the European Clubs Cups, scheduled to begin in Rethymnon on 28 September 2003.

The Mayor of Geropotamos, Crete, Vangelis Mavromatis, issued a welcome address on occasion of the Kasparov vs. Azmaiparashivili clash in the village of Panormos, one of the communities comprising the Municipality.
