MAYOR'S ADDRESS

The Mayor of Geropotamos and the whole of the Municipal Council welcome the top chess player of all times, Garry Kasparov, whom he will have the honour of hosting for two weeks in the Municipality of Geropotamos, an area which combines the history and the legends of the past with modern-day reality, tradiotional life in the villages with modern, high-quality tourist services.

It is for all of us an honour that the Municipality of Geropotamos has been selected to host this clash of international importance, the match of this great world class chess player against the European Champion, Georgia's Zurab Azmaiparashvili, who has been competing with Kydon S.C. of Chania for the past two years.

The two top chess players and all those that will come to follow their clash, will have the opportunity to take in the beauty of our area, to come to know its history, to taste our Mediterranean cuisine and to experience the traditional Cretan hospitality.

The Municipality of Geropotamos is and will continue to be a supporter of such events, that greatly contribute to the cultural development of a place and also play a major role in promoting its tourist attractions.

We congratulate the two clubs, Kaissa of Rethymnon and Kydon of Chania for their continued presence in the game and their will to take on the organisation of major international competitions, which they have proved to do with success and a unique publicity that has helped our Municipality develop into a world chess centre.
