Kydon
Sports Club, based in the city of Chania, in western
Crete, is the host of this year's European Chess Clubs
Cups. The club was founded in 1949 and is active in eight
sports today: Athletics, basketball, volleyball, cycling,
chess, weightlifting, gymnastics and handball.

Clinches 2003 European Title
NAO Chess Club
of Paris is the 2003 European Clubs Cup winner, following a
decisive victory 4-2 over Israel's Beer-Sheva Chess Club in the
closing round of the competition, which concluded Saturday evening
in Rethymnon, Crete. The French club, which led the rankings after
Round 6, left the four teams that were following a point behind
out of contention, as soon as it clinched the victory over the
Israeli club. The decisive games of the NAO v. Beer-Sheva match
were won by Peter Svidler (2723) over Michael Roiz (2554) on board
2 and by Laurent Fressinet (2640) over Alik Vydelsalver (2449) on
board 6. The other four games ended in a tie.

Women's Title Goes
To Montenegro
Internet CG of
Podgorica, Montenegro, defeated the defending champions, Serbia's
BAS Beograd, 2½-1½
in the closing round of the 2003 Women's European Clubs Cup, which
concluded Saturday evening in Rethymnon, to clinch the title. The
two teams had been tied after Round 6, together with NTN Tbilisi
of Gerogia, which finished second. Third came in Russia's
Ladya-Kazan-1000, leaving BAS Beograd in fourth place, amongst the
13 entrants.
