The Greek Champions S.C. Kydon of Chania organize every year some significant national and international chess events. The International Tournament "Battle of Crete" is held every year in the beautiful Greek island. Also, in 2001, S.C. Kydon organized the European Clubs Cup. On Apil and May 2002, in co-operation with Caissa C.C., the Greek Youth National Championships, as well as the Chess Festival "Easter 2002 in Rethymno" was held in Rethymno, Crete.

KYDON SPORTS CLUB of CHANIA is organising in Crete 29th September - 4th October the EUROPEAN RAPID & BLITZ CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002. The championships will be organised, under the best conditions, in the hotel IBEROSTAR CRETA MARINE*****, that is the same hotel tha last year was organised with success the EUROPEAN CLUB CUP. The championships are organised immediately after the European Club Cup which is organised in Kalithea near Thessaloniki. On Sunday 29 September there is a direct flight in the afternoon from Thessaloniki to Heraklion (Creta). The total cost of the direct flight Thessaloniki-Heraklion-Thessaloniki is 225 euros. We can offer you for the direct flight, either Thessaloniki-Heraklion-Thessaloniki, either Heraklion-Thessaloniki-Heraklion, the price 189 euros. For this offer, we need of you to make soon the reservation via the organising committe, and to make a bank transfer of the tickets' cost The flight that we recommend is Thessaloniki-Heraklion on 29/9 at 16:50 and Heraklion-Thessaloniki-Heraklion on 5/10 at 8:25. For whoever wants to flight Heraklion-Thessaloniki-Heraklion, we recommend Heraklion-Thessaloniki on 21/9 at 8:25 and Thessaloniki-Heraklion on 29/9 at 16:50. TOURNAMENT RULES: The Rapid Championships shall take the form of a 11 rounds Swiss system tournament. Each round consists of one game. Rate of play: 15 minutes + 10 seconds before each move per player per game. The Blitz Championships shall take the form of a 20 rounds Swiss system tournament. Each round consists of two games such that each player will play one game with White and one with Black against the same opponent. Rate of play: 5 minutes per player per game. The cost for the high rated players in the hotel (five stars) is full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner in buffet) 80 euros per day in single room and 60 euros in double room.The cost of the transfer from and to the airport is 40 euros.
