Crete - Chania
Crete lies at the point where the continents
of Europe, Asia and Africa meet. It is the fifth largest island
in the Mediterranean with an area of 8,335 square kilometers.
It has an elongated shape with an east-west axis and a length
of 257km and a maximum width of 60km. However, in the area of
Ierapetra, Crete is only 12km wide .
Chania
is the capital city of the prefecture of Chania. This
beautiful city on the north shore of Crete is about 1 hour (59km)
from Rethimnon and 2 1/2 hours (137km) from Iraklion on the National
Road. It is easily accessible from Athens by three regular flights
a day (45 minutes) during winter and four during summer. The International
Airport of Chania, 11km outside the city on the Akrotiri, also
has regular flights to other European countries: one regular flight
a week to Germany as well as numerous charter flights during the
summer from England, Sweden, Norway, Germany and France. There
is also a daily boat from Piraeus (Athens) to Souda (Chania).
